Step in to a world of nature that is populated with an array of eye catching inhabitants at the Brookfield Zoo. Housing over 450 animals amidst a serene and aesthetically pleasing environment a visit to this destination is sure to create lasting memories.

When thinking of a zoo one of the first images conjured is that of animals in cages, but it is in this regard that the Brookfield Zoo distinguishes itself from its counterparts. Straying away from the norm visitors to this destination will find free roaming animals separated only by moats and ditches removing the constrictive image normally associated with a zoo.

The Brookfield Zoo also pioneered some firsts in the United States. The zoo was the first to house a Giant Panda, feature a completely indoor dolphin exhibit and the first completely indoor rainforest exhibit.

Though an immense variety of animals can be found in the zoo there are some noteworthy stars. The 6.5 ton bull elephant known as Ziggy is arguably the most famous of all. This elephant was kept in a secure indoor area for almost thirty years after attacking its trainer in 1941.

Another famous resident is Binti Jua who was recognized for her heroic actions. In 1996 Binti Jua rescued a boy who had fallen in to the gorilla exhibit by carrying him to her trainers. This incident received much international attention.

Olga the Atlantic walrus is another famous resident who lived at the zoo from 1962 till 1988 and is remembered with a special statue created in her likeness.

Beyond live animals Brookfield Zoo also features various exhibits that showcase different aspects of animal life. In 2009 the theme was dinosaurs which brought 18 animatronic dinosaurs including the ferocious King of the Dinosaurs, the Tyrannosaurus Rex.

If only you could grant your child’s wish and bring him to the zoo every single day. That would be swell, right? Every time your sweet little one sees animals on TV, he gets all excited and recalls his exciting time visiting live animals in their “home” in the city. You in the meantime, relish the look of giddiness on your child’s face. I have good news for you…you can bring the zoo to your home, right to your child’s bedroom, playroom or whatever spare room you have. His very own animal place!

To decorate with animals in mind is easy to do. All you need are some materials (very easy to find) and additional props to complete the design. First, paint the walls the colors of the outdoor. Zoos are outdoor venues and using colors that depict the feeling of being outside and going around the zoo grounds makes it more realistic. Paint the walls and ceilings a sky blue and dabble some white for the clouds. Paint pictures of trees, benches, grass, flowers, etc. If you can incorporate the images you see in your local zoo, the more your kid will associate the design with the real zoo. Adding some animal pictures to the paint will be great! If not, hang posters and artworks with animals, the wild or zoo images in them.

Next, have a black garden hose ready and use this to mount small stuffed animal toys. This will be the make-shift bars for the animals. The hose should have a floor to ceiling reach. Attach the hose loosely to the wall with a double sided tape or strong glue. Secure the attachment with screws. Make sure that the hose bars won’t bulge or bend when placed with the stuffed animals.

Accessorize the room with more animal-inspired objects such as beddings and curtains in animal prints. For better effects, decorate with an animal printed area rug and make it the room’s focal point by placing it at the center. You can add another one or two smaller rugs placed by the door and by the window or cabinet also in animal prints. An alternative is to buy children area rugs with animal drawings. Your child will love the colorful design and most of all, the images of cute animals, right there on his bedroom floor!

In addition to animal print area rugs, you should use various animal prints for bedding and curtains. This will go well with wooden furnishings. If you truly feel creative and have the resources, consider finding a bed shaped like a train engine and stencils the words Zoo Express on the side. A train tour of the zoo is always a fun experience and now your child can treat him or herself to a ride through the zoo any day of the week.

Your child will never have to miss visiting the zoo. His playtime will always be fun, surrounded by his favorite animals. And you will always see a happy smile on your child’s face.

The Singapore Zoo is made on the open zoo conception which is basically animals being kept in large enclosures that look like as directly as possible to their natural habitats. Dry and wet moats or natural barriers are positioned to take apart the animals from the visitors. These are generally concealed and skilfully considered into the complete enclosure in order to look much like a part of the enclosure itself. Based on the animal, several sorts of barriers are second-hand, but the zoo tries to maintain that ‘open concept’ as a living being within its design.
